Meeting people is part of everyday life. Dating is an activity that follows "meeting" someone with mutual interest as yours and who has the same goal of having an intimate relationship afterwards. The main purpose of dating is for partnership. Human beings have the social need to belong and to be with someone. Dating has evolved from traditional to modern styles. The traditional dating requires physical meeting of two individuals, say in a party or an event. Modern ones do not require physically meeting each other.

Technology, specifically the world wide web, paved the way for online dating. Online dating involves the usual communication between two people, establishing "relationship" based on common interests. The new rendezvous are called online dating sites. Online dating has been a common thing for teenagers. In the United States alone, kids as young as 6th or 7th grade engage in online dating. Teenagers in their adolescent years tend to enjoy this activity, making it a part of their "exploration" stage. Teen online dating usually starts with social networking sites. Many teenagers enjoy websites like Facebook, Multiply, MySpace, or Friendster.

These websites allow teenagers to introduce themselves to the public through their profiles. They can post basic information, location, pictures, interests, and current emotions through "shout out" messages. The information is accessible to anybody who has an account in the same networking site. From there, users can converse through email, chat, or small messages. Another way is through online dating sites. There are paid ones and there are also free online dating websites. There are online dating sites designed for different age groups: young adults, teenagers, adults, yuppies, and even for oldies. Anyone is welcome to join.

This makes dating easier and more accessible to anyone around the world. And this also increases the anxiety of parents; knowing that their teens can just meet anyone from anywhere with simple click of the mouse. It is important for the parents and teens to discuss online dating openly. Parents should discuss with their children the importance of limiting the information being shared online.

In this way, the teenage child will know which detail can be given out, and which ones to keep. As a precaution, parents should not allow their teens to meet-up with their dates alone. Parents should talk about the known fact that people who do dating online do not
